🌍 World Health Day 2025 🩺
This week, for World Health Day, we’re reminded that health is a human right — not a privilege.
This year’s theme, “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures”, emphasizes the critical importance of maternal and newborn health, one of the most urgent and foundational issues in global health.
📊 Some sobering statistics:
- A woman still dies every 2 minutes from pregnancy or childbirth complications — almost all preventable.
- Each year, over 2 million families experience the loss of a newborn in the first month of life — and 2 million more are faced with stillbirth. Behind each number is a story of love, loss, and resilience.
- 92% of maternal deaths occur in low- and lower-middle-income countries.
But maternal and newborn health is only the beginning.
📉 The broader picture of world health:
- Over 4.5 billion people – more than half the global population – lack access to essential health services.
- 930 million people spend more than 10% of their income on out-of-pocket healthcare.
- Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes account for 74% of all global deaths.
- The mental health crisis continues to grow, with nearly 1 billion people living with a mental disorder, yet access to care remains dangerously low.
- The world faces a projected shortfall of 10 million healthcare workers by 2030 — mostly in low-income areas.
So where do we go from here?
➡️ How can we build stronger, fairer health systems?
➡️ What role can technology and innovation play in closing the gap?
➡️ How do we support health equity from the very beginning of life?
Health for all begins at birth — but it must be sustained across every stage of life.
